Watching YouTube Videos

Youtube app will put you under surveillance and use its algorithms to manipulate you and target ads based on your data. Try these apps to watch YouTube content instead with privacy.

  • FreeTube: FreeTube is a privacy-respecting app for watching YouTube on desktop operating systems– GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, MacOS and can be downloaded from here. No data mining, no ads, allows downloads and local subscriptions.

  • Newpipe: Newpipe is an Android app for privately watching YouTube videos. It is also very feature rich as it shows no ads, allows playing videos in background, allows audio/video downloads, and you can subscribe to your favorite channels for updates.

  • Invidious: Invidious is a privacy-respcting, free software, alternative front-end to YouTube without any ads or tracking. You can visit any of these publicinstances in your web browser and watch YouTube videos on Invidious.

Chatting Apps

These are replacements of chatting apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal.

  • Quicksy: For Android users, we recommend Quicksy. Quicksy sends messages end-to-end encrypted by default so that only the sender and receiver can read messages. It is Free Software, decentralized and federated. Quicksy is as convenient as WhatsApp or Telegram, but it respects the freedom as well.

  • Conversations: If you would like to talk to Quicksy users, but without giving away your phone number, then you can try Conversations app which allows registering accounts on service within the app. Check out the video tutorial by Ravi, if you need help.

  • Siskin IM: Siskin IM is a chatting app available on Apple iPhone’s App Store. It will give you a few services as options. Choose one of them and create an account, and check your emails for a verification email. Once you verify, your account will get activated. Users using Siskin IM can talk to users having account on Quicksy.

Web Browser

If you are using any proprietary browser, like Google Chrome(which is an instrument of surveillance), Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari(which collects and sends data to a Chinese company) web browsers, please choose one of these.

  • Tor Browser: Tor Browser is the leading browser for anonymity and privacy online, due to its design. It is available for all the major operating systems– Windows, Android, GNU/Linux, iOS.   • Librewolf: Librewolf is a desktop web browser which is an independent fork of Firefox, with the primary goals of privacy, security and user freedom. Check the list of privacy-enhancing features of Librewolf. It is available for all the major desktop operating systems.

  • Ungoogled Chromium: Ungoogled Chromium removes Google dependencies from the Google’s Chromium browser to make it more privacy-respecting. Available for Android, GNU/Linux, macOS.

  • Fennec F-Droid: Fennec F-Droid is a web browser for Android, available on F-Droid app store. It has many enhancements for privacy.

  • Monocles Browser: Monocles Browser is for Android phones and it is developed by the Monocles project. In Monocles Browser, Javascript and cookies are deactivated by default to ensure the greatest possible security. However, for better use of the monocles pages it is recommended to allow for this Javascript and cookies. Simply add to the trusted domains in the menu. The monocles metasearch engine does not store your IP or any other data. Grab it from the F-Droid app store.

Online Meetings/Classes

If you are using Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc., please choose from the list below:

  • Jitsi Meet: You are invited to use our Jitsi Meet service,, for your daily personal needs. A list of public Jitsi services are listed here. You just need to visit the Jitsi URL and enter a room name, just share the room link with the people you would like to meet, which your contacts just need to visit to join the meeting. There is no account needed to join a Jitsi meeting. You can also pay someone to set up a self-hosted Jitsi service.

  • BigBlueButton: BigBlueButton is a fully-featured videoconferencing solution, and it is also suited for online classes. List of publicly available BigBlueButton services are here.
